Week Two

Lecture / Session one

It was really cool hearing about design as a means for social change and a little of the history around this subject. Strangely, despite being a politically involved socialist and an interested designer I'd never actually thought of utilising my design skills as an agent for political statements. As always it was really good to see examples of political design posters.

-Keep your design simple, clear and strong.

I found today's class especially helpful. Our exercise was to ideate thumbnails related to our issue using a particular word or idea. It was a challenging task for some of our given words but a very useful one. This is a vital stage of design, ideation and brainstorming are invaluable skills, they allow you to get out all your possible thoughts and ideas and dig deeper into the visual possibilities.

I also appreciated looking at different symbols with the class and brainstorming their potential meaning only to see how easily the meaning can become an opposite one by adding another simple symbol. For example, the image of a Rook, meaning strength, stability, authority etc. coupled with a cracked line becomes unstable and failing. So simple yet very effective.

Ideas relating to death and death phrases, such as 'dead as a dodo' or 'wearing the pine over coat'

Ideas for the phrase '6 of one half a dozen of the other' and the idea of the fishing hook

Using 'fisherman'

'6 of one half a dozen'

I then went back and chose another word to ideate with - 'crow'

A satirical sketch I mocked up:

Something more relatable to us students, yet also something that will suck at our finances for years, even decades to come. :
